Daniil Medvedev v Richard Gasquet Head to Head

This is the third meeting between both players. They are tied at 1-1 with Gasquet winning on the indoor hard courts of Montpellier and Medvedev on a similar surface in St. Petersburg.

Medvedev Begins Quest For Maiden Major Title

World number two Daniil Medvedev begins his quest for a maiden grand slam in New York as one of the favorites after Novak Djokovic and also one of the potential individuals who can come in the way of a calendar slam for the world number one from Serbia.

It has been a good year for Medvedev but he will be disappointed with some of his results, most importantly his showing in the Aussie Open final at Melbourne against Djokovic.

With a mix of good form across surfaces, especially hard courts, indoors and even on grass, the Russian was a finalist here in 2019 losing an epic five setter to Rafa Nadal and a semi-finalist last year against eventual champion Dominic Thiem.

Medvedev won the Canada Open and lost in the semi-finals in Cincinnati and will be coming into the US Open confident on the surface.

With a draw that features some veterans who are not quite what they were, e.g Gasquet, Cilic, Dimitrov, the Russian will be looking to get into top gear early and make a deep run again here at the US Open.

Gasquet Exhibits Poise At Winston Salem

Starting out his season at the ATP Melbourne 250, Gasquet has featured in only four more tournaments on hard court surfaces since then. Winner of nine ATP titles on the hard courts and a US Open semi-finalist,  it has not been a season to remember for the Frenchman.

A late start to the US Open Series, a former top ten player Gasquet,  made it to the main draw of the Cincinnati Masters with wins over Fernando Verdasco and Jaume Munar. Unfortunately for him, that was the end of the road when he lost to Andy Murray in straight sets in the opener.

Gasquet featured in Winston Salem this week and hit some good form with impressive wins against Egor Gerasimov and Dan Evans before a quarter-final loss to rising star Emil Ruusuvuori from Finland.

The Frenchman will hope to get into good nick early on in his opener or else an opponent like Medvedev can run away with the match in no time.

Medvedev v Gasquet Prediction and Tip

While on paper this reads like a good opening round contest, the reality is that the two players are at very different places in their careers. While Medvedev is one of the favorites at the tournament, Gasquet is not the force that he was, despite a good run this week at Winston Salem. Expect a comfortable win for the number two seed.
