Teenage Alcaraz Storms Into a Third Semifinal
NextGen star Carlos Alcaraz stormed into a third semifinal of the season with a straight sets win over Marcos Giron in the quarterfinal on Thursday.
The 18-year-old, who is the only seeded player left in the tournament, needed just an and 40 minutes to oust the American 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. The match began with two consecutive breaks, but both players steadied themselves and held all their serves from there on to force the tiebreak, which was dominated by Alcaraz.
Having captured the first set, the Spaniard grew in confidence and tamed Giron in the next set, breaking him thrice in the second, while losing serve just once.
Having shown his class on clay this season, Alcaraz is now showing what he is capable of doing on hard courts. In what has been a breakthrough season, the World No. 54 reached a first tour-level semifinal in Marbella, then made it to the third round of the French Open before capturing his first-ever ATP crown in Umag.
He came to Winston Salem with a 3-5 season record on hard surfaces, but following wins over Alexei Popyrin, fourth seed Marton Fucsovics and Giron over the last three rounds he has improved that record to 6-5. Can he reach a second career final on Friday?

Ymer Rallies to Oust Tiafoe
World No. 90 Mikael Ymer bounced back after losing the first set against Frances Tiafoe on Thursday to march into a first semifinal of the season.
Ymer who was ousted in his last two tournaments, in Switzerland and Austria, at the quarterfinal stage finally was able to make the step up by improving his head to head record against Tiafoe to 2-1.
Tiafoe took the first set in the tiebreak, but Ymer made an emphatic comeback, winning the two hour and 17 minute contest 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, 6-3. The 22-year-old Swede broke his opponent seven times in the match and saved nine of 12 break points.
Ymer had begun the tournament with a three-set win over Stefano Travaglia in the opening round, but didn’t have much trouble in dispatching Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Max Purcell in the second and third rounds respectively.
Alcaraz v Ymer Prediction and Tip
This is going to be a cracking contest between the two next generation players. Although the seeded Alcaraz will be the favourite, Ymer will give his all as he stands on the brink of a first career final. The match may need three sets to separate the two.
