Nishikori’s Fine Record in New York

In 2014 Nishikori became the first Asian man to reach a Grand Slam final, when he was beaten by Marin Cilic in New York.

Two years after that he reached the semi-finals, and again in 2018.

That though was before the string of injuries that saw him plunge down the world rankings.

Recently there have been signs that the Japanese number one may be finding some form again.

At the Tokyo Olympics, he performed creditably, getting to the quarter-finals before losing to Novak Djokovic.

And then he did even better in Washington, where he reached the semi-finals before losing to the American Mackenzie McDonald,

He was last in action in Toronto where he beat Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia in the first round, but, having felt a twinge in training, pulled out of his next encounter with Hubert Hurkasz of Poland.

Caruso’s First Hard Court Match Since March

Much better known as a clay court player, Caruso’s run to the US Open last year was a surprise and equalled his best ever performance at a Grand Slam event,

He then went on to reach the most recent of his Challenger finals, beaten by Frances Tiafoe in Parma.

His preparation though for this year’s tournament has not been the best because he has not stepped on a hard court competitively since losing in the first round of Miami back in March.

And, apart from two first round defeats on grass, including at Wimbledon, he has stuck to clay since then.

His best result in that time came when he reached the semi-final of a Challenger tournament on home soil in Perugia in July.

He was last in action in another Challenger tournament, this time in San Marion, losing in the second round to the Dane, Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune.

Nishikori v Caruso Prediction and Tip

Nishikori has an excellent record at the US Open and should maintain that against Caruso. The Italian may have reached the third round last year but, by staying on clay and not participating in any hard court events in the warm-up, he has dome his chances of progressing far no good at all.
