Swiatek Coming off Early Cincinnati Ouster

There is always a context to good or bad form and on the face of it, a quarterfinal at French Open and fourth round at Wimbledon shouldn’t quite count as bad form. That said, when one is referring to a Grand Slam winner and a top-10 player who has already won a couple of titles this season, Swiatek would have expected to do a lot better.

More so because of what followed.

At the Tokyo Olympics, Swiatek lost in her second round match to Paula Badosa, while losing her opener in Cincinnati to Ons Jabeur. She had opted out of playing at the Rogers Cup before that.

What that means is Swiatek isn’t coming off a lot of competitive tennis on hard court surfaces but the mitigating circumstances can be found in her form on this surface otherwise. She has already won a title in Adelaide, not dropping more than four games in any of the set and reached the fourth round at Australian Open.

Swiatek shouldn’t be too worried despite her recent form given her opponent has never seen a better rank than 132nd in the world.

Loeb a Surprise Qualifier

For a player who has never won a Grand Slam main draw match and someone who had qualified for a major just once before this, Loeb has been a surprise entrant into the main draw of this year’s US Open.

Not just because of her historical underperformance in majors but also because Loeb went into all her three qualifying matches as an underdog. She won them.

In the first qualifier, Loeb overcame India’s Ankita Raina, then defeated Anna-Lena Friedsam before surprising Mihaela Buzarnescu against whom she was 2/1 underdog to win.

Can she now push Swiatek a little here?
