Rybakina Will Look to Overcome Nerves in Close Matches

World No. 20 Elena Rybakina has lost a bit of form in North America, going 3-3 from the three tournaments leading up to the U.S. Open.

The Kazakh won her only match leading up to the quarterfinals in San Jose, but was sent packing in the last eight by Danielle Collins. She was dumped out of  the first round in Montreal before winning her first two rounds convincingly in Cincinnati, but was denied a place in the quarterfinals by Paula Badosa.

Overall, Rybakina has been at her best in big tournaments this year, reaching her first Grand Slam quarterfinal at Roland Garros, the fourth round of Wimbledon on her main draw debut and finishing fourth at the Olympics after losing the bronze medal match to Elina Svitolina.

However, Rybakina has struggled to produce the same level of intensity on the tour, reaching just one semifinal. She reached five WTA finals last season, winning the Hobart crown for her second career title.

Another area that needs improvement? It’s the ability to hold nerves in close matches. She lost the French Open quarterfinal to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova despite taking the first set. At Wimbledon, she forced the decider against Aryna Sabalenka but faltered in the third. In Tokyo, she lost an edge-of-the-seat semifinal to Belinda Bencic and then failed to close out the bronze medal match against Svitolina, throwing away her first set lead.

Sasnovich Looked in Decent Touch in the Tune-Up

The World No. 99 will be making her eighth appearance at the U.S. Open. She has made it to the third round twice, including in 2020, when she knocked out the 12th seed Marketa Vondrousova en route but lost a tough three-setter to Yulia Putintseva.

The 27-year-old is 14-13 from her main draw appearances this year and is headed to New York in good form having reached her second quarterfinal of the season in Cleveland this week. Sasnovich knocked out Christina McHale in the first round an then dug deep against fifth seed Nadia Podoroska to score a come-from-behind win in the Round of 16. She couldn’t match the power of Irina-Camelia Begu in the last eight though, exiting the tournament with a straight sets defeat.

Earlier, she had made it to the last eight in Belgrade and also reached the third round at Wimbledon, but that was after Serena Williams was forced to retire from their first round contest.

Rybakina v Sasnovich Prediction and Tip

Sasnovich can be a difficult player to beat, but the Kazakh starts the favourite in this contest and given her ability to raise her game in big tournaments, the 19th seed should advance to the next round.

Tip: Rybakina to win in straight sets: 10/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
