Elise Mertens v Rebecca Peterson Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both of them came at the Cincinnati Open – one of which was held in New York last year. Mertens won both to take a 2-0 head to head lead.

Things were going rather well for the consistent Mertens but in recent times she has found the going tough, having struggled to string together three wins in a row.
Since making the quarterfinals in Madrid in May, Mertens has featured in nine tournaments and in none of them has she managed to make it past two victories. A third round at both French Open and Wimbledon were her best performances.
The surprising bit is Mertens has typically done rather well in the smaller tournaments, having reached 10 competition finals over a period between 2017 and 2021 but all of a sudden hit a rut.
The good news for Mertens is her performance at US Open has been consistent, having reached the quarterfinal at both the previous two editions. Can she use that history to turn her form around here?

Peterson Coming off Chicago Semifinal
Having earlier made it to the semifinal at Bastad Open back home, Sweden’s Peterson will be rather chuffed with the way she played in Chicago last week.
In the competition leading up to this year’s US Open, Peterson defeated Marie Bouzkova, Viktoria Golubic and Tereza Martincova in three successive matches to reach the semifinal. There she fell to the eventual champion Elina Svitolina but not before she had given her a solid fight and taken it to the third.
Peterson’s overall record on hard courts this year isn’t the greatest though, having won seven and lost eight matches. A quarterfinal at Phillip Island Trophy at the start of the season helped that record but other than things have been moving rather slowly for her.
Whether her performance in Chicago and her opponent’s lack of excellent form helps her needs to be seen.
Mertens v Peterson Prediction and Tip
Mertens will still start a favourite but we believe Peterson would do better than the 3/1 odds on offer for her win. Expect bit of a fight in the Swede.
