Krajinovic Made Hamburg Final

His progress to the third round of the US Open last year was his best result to date in a Grand Slam, although Krajinovic was to emulate that in Melbourne this year.

A serial winner and finalist on the Challenger circuit, the Serb, who plays Davis Cup for his country, has yet to translate that into wins on the senior tour, but he did reach his fourth career final last month beaten by Pablo Carreno-Busta on the clay of Hamburg.

He chose to stay on clay for as long as possible after that reaching the second round in both Umag and Kitzbuhel.

When he did switch to American hard courts, he lost in the first round of the Cincinnati Masters to the Alex de Minaur, despite taking the first set off the Australian to love.

Pella Better Known as a Clay Court Player

This will be Pella’s seventh appearance in the main draw at Flushing Meadows, and the best he has previously managed in New York is a third round appearance in 2018.

Primarily known as a clay court player, it is perhaps surprising that his best performance in a Grand Slam event came at Wimbledon, two years ago, when he reached the quarter-finals.

But this year, arguably his most impressive result cane back on his favourite surface of clay, when he got to the last eight of the Monte Carlo Masters.

He had been in disappointing form since losing in the second round of the French Open, but partly rectified that by getting to the third round in Cincinnati, before losing to the eventual winner, Alexander Zverev.

Last week, he went down in three sets to Jordan Thompson of Australia in the opening round in Winston-Salem.

Krajinovic v Pella Prediction and Tip

Both players are happier on a clay court, and neither has a good Grand Slam record. However, Krajinovic will start the clear favourite because he is better able to adapt his game to the conditions likely to be found in New York.
