Leylah Fernandez v Ana Konjuh Head to Head

The two ladies met as recently as the Madrid Open qualifiers earlier this season. Konjuh won the match in three sets to take a 1-0 lead over her Canadian adversary.

Konjuh Hoping for a Solid Run in New York

Former World No. 20 Ana Konjuh was enjoying a promising start to her career before being derailed by health concerns. Through 2018-2020, the 23-year-0ld Croatian fell out of the top 1000 and has spent her time since finding her rhythm.

And in all honesty, she has done a wonderful job so far.

Starting the year as World No. 465, she is now ranked at the 88th position in the WTA rankings. Even though there are still quite a few kinks to be worked out, Konjuh has grown superbly as a player in 2021 and made some terrific strides on the tour.

Case in point, she reached the fourth round in the Miami Open and quarterfinal in the Istanbul Cup. A few weeks later in the Serbia Ladies Open, she reached the final as a qualifier but only to lose to Paula Badosa. Nonetheless, it was her first singles final in over four years.

While her grass swing wasn’t that exciting, she found her groove once again the WTA San Jose where she made it to the semis, once again as a qualifier.

Fernandez Battling with Inconsistency

18-year-old Leylah Ann Fernandez won the first singles title of her career in the 2021 Monterrey Open after beating Viktorija Golubic in the final. However, the young Canadian has struggled a great deal to build on that success and move up further in the rankings.

In fact, with the exception of that week in Monterrey, Fernandez has not made it past the second round in any other WTA tournament this season.

Her last couple of tournaments were in Montreal and Cincinnati where the World No. 73 was beaten in the first round itself by Harriet Dart and Alison Riske respectively.

That said, Fernandez is a two-time Junior Grand Slam finalist and is certainly talented, if not experienced enough. She has the goods to put up a solid fight here in the US Open.

Fernandez v Konjuh Prediction and Tip

I’m predicting a win for Konjuh here, purely owing to her experience and the kind of remarkable season she has enjoyed this year.
