Watson has had an up and down year throughout 2021, with a mix of impressive and disappointing results.
Heather Watson failed to capitalise on her deepest run of the year, where she reached the semi-finals of Birmingham, seeing off Golubic, Zhang, and Vekic before losing to eventual champion Ons Jabeur 6-3 6-3. After this Watson suffered a number of first round defeats, failing to win a match on the WTA circuit from the 19th of June until the 7th of August, overcoming Sebov in Montreal qualifying in straight sets 6-0 6-3.
The Brit arrives in New York currently ranked 62nd, with an 11-17 Win/Loss ratio for the year which is a statistic she will be looking to improve. Her opening tie against Juvan is certainly winnable, however, mental battles appear to be the biggest issue for Watson.
If she is able to overcome Juvan, she will face-off against either Collins of Suarez Navarro in round 2.

Can Juvan Get Some Momentum?
Juvan has also struggled to consistency shake her opponents’ hand as the winner throughout 2021, she currently has a 14-14 Win/Loss Ratio for the year within qualifying and main draw matches.
After winning her opening round in Monterrey against Osorio Serrano on, on the 16th March, Juvan embarked on a tough few months failing to secure a win until the 30th June where she impressively dispatches of Belinda Bencic in straight sets 6-3 6-3.
The 20-year-old backed up this win by getting the better of Burel in the 2nd round, before losing to Coco Gauff 6-3 6-3 on the famous Centre Court.
Back in January, Juvan also successfully fought her way through qualifying without dropping a set, beating Sanders, Kalinina, and Sramkova and then winning her opening main draw match against Wang, before losing to Swiatek.
Juvan arrives in New York aiming to build some momentum, and consistency win back-to-back matches on the circuit.

It is likely to be a close match between these two players, with Watson being the slight favourite to advance to the second round due to her impressive depth and ball placement that will keep Juvan moving a lot.
