Vondrousova Handed a Tricky Draw

Former World No. 14 Marketa Vondrousova finds herself in a precarious bracket in the US Open. Should she win her match against Ruse, the 22-year-old will potentially face Daria Kasatkina next, followed by a possible third-round encounter against Elina Svitolina.

In light of the form she has had of late, this may seem like a big ask of her.

Vondrousova’s US Open preparation was less than eventful comprising a first-round exit in the Cincinnati Open and a quarterfinal appearance in the Chicago Open (losing to Belinda Bencic and Alize Cornet respectively).

That said, Vondrousova was the silver finisher in the Tokyo Olympics so her recent form hasn’t been all that disheartening.

Having reached the semis in the Yarra Valley Classic and the fourth-round in the Australian Open, the current world number 38 has definitely got the goods to deliver a good performance at the Flushing Meadows. But what she has lacked this season is consistency as a result of which, she has fallen out of the top 20.

Ruse Clears Qualifiers

Elena-Gabriela Ruse, playing in just her third US Open, successfully cleared the qualifiers to reach the main draw for the first time in her career.

Her journey entailed wins over Veronica Cepede Royg, Kurumi Nara, and Federica di Sarra.

The 23-year-old may be ranked #108 at the moment but considering that she was in the early 170s at the start of the season (and 190s in the mid), this is a huge accomplishment by the Romanian. While the majority of her season has seen Ruse losing in the early rounds, the European Hamburg Open and Palermo Open served as notable exceptions.

Playing as a qualifier in both those tournaments, she won the title in Hamburg and was a finalist in Palermo.

However, consistency was once again a problem here as she couldn’t quite build on this success. Her last tournament was the Cincinnati Open where she lost in the qualifiers.

Vondrousova v Ruse Prediction and Tip

While Vondrousova will start as the favourite, Ruse has shown that she can punch well above her weight. Expect an intriguing game of tennis where Vondrousova should come out as the winner.
