They met once at qualifying round in China in 2017, with Munar winning in straight sets.

Karatsev’s Struggles Mounting

He was great through the first five months of the season, but has gone off the boil over the last couple of months.

Karatsev’s current form has been concerning as the Russian comes to the U.S. Open having won just one match in his past four tournaments, which includes the Olympics.

Since his first round defeat to Jeremy Chardy at Wimbledon, the World No. 25 won the first round at the Olympics but fell in the next to Chardy again. He had a first-round bye at the Canadian Open, but couldn’t win his opener against Karen Khachanov. Marin Cilic added piled more misery on the Russian with a straight sets defeat in Cincinnati.

In February, Karatsev came from nowhere to reach the semifinals of the Australian Open and then went on to capture the crown in Dubai to prove that his Melbourne run was no fluke. He reached another final this year, in Belgrade, this time b defeating Novak Djokovic in the semifinal, but missed out on the title after a tough loss to Matteo Berrettini.

How far can he go on his U.S. Open debut?

Munar Having No Impact Outside Clay

He had a solid start to the season, but has struggled to keep the momentum going and a 2-8 record from his last 10 matches (including qualifiers) is a reflection of his recent slump. Not that he was expected to win outside clay, his preferred surface, but he has suffered even on clay since reaching the semifinals in Parma.

Into his fourth U.S. Open, the world No. 65 will be looking to prevent a hat-trick of first-round exits. He reached the second round only once on his debut in 2018.

The Spaniard, who reached a maiden ATP final in Andalusia this year, was also a quarterfinalist at the Buenos Aires Open and reached three Challenger finals, winning one title and finishing runner-up in two of them.

Karatsev v Munar Prediction and Tip

It’s a contest between two struggling players, but Karatsev is a much better player on hard courts than his opponent and he shouldn’t have much trouble in dispatching the Spaniard and advancing.
