Sinner Looks to Create More History

Just a few weeks ago, Jannik Sinner celebrated his 20th birthday. For a player who only turned professional six years ago – and had switched careers as a youngster – the journey has been surreal.

Sinner has captured four career titles including his latest one on the hard courts of Washington earlier this month.

In fact, his success in America’s capital came completely out of the blue. The Italian was on a four-match losing streak, and had suffered a chastening loss to Christopher O’Connell in Atlanta.

But the manner in which he bounced back in Washington was simply brilliant. He won his biggest title to date with a thrilling three-set victory over Mavkenzie McDonald.

Sinner’s results this year have catapulted his rise to within an unlikely spot for the Nitto ATP Finals in his home country. But can he create more history at the City that never sleeps, beginning with his opening match against Max Purcell?

Purcell Made Round of 16 at Winston-Salem

Max Purcell comes to this year’s US Open playing some of the best tennis of his career. The 23-year-old Australian broke the world’s top 200 shortly after making his first ATP semifinal in Eastbourne.

He broke new ground when he captured his maiden ATP Challenger title in Nur Sultan. Those performances saw him get a last-minute call from Australia’s Olympics team to replace Alex De Minaur who was ruled out due to covid.

And Purcell made the most of that rare opportunity to showcase his talent in Tokyo. He upset the highly-fancied Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first round, before losing to Dominik Koepfer.

Last week, the World No. 191 reached the Round of 16 at Winston-Salem as a qualifie. That run included another shock win over his accomplished Challenger compatriot Jordan Tbompson.

He enters the US Open as a wild card.
