John Isner v Brandon Nakashima Head to Head
Isner and Nakashima have featured in two, career, head-to-head clashes till date and are tied at one win apiece. Their last meeting came in the final of the Atlanta Open this year, with the big-serving coming through in straight sets.

Isner Didn’t Have a Great Time in Cincinnati
After the disappointment of going down in an epic five-setter against Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan at this year’s Wimbledon Championships, Isner more than made amends in his two subsequent Tour events.
The big-serving American reached the semifinals of the Los Cabos Open and followed it up with a title-clinching campaign at the Atlanta Open.
And, call it a strange coincidence or a quirk of fate that it was fellow countryman Brandon Nakashima who was on the other side of the outcomes of both these matches.
The Los Cabos showdown, which was also their first-ever head-to-head clash, went Nakashima’s way as Isner went down 5-7, 4-6. However, the 6’10” Isner had his own back in the tournament that came immediately after, pipping his fellow American to the title at the Atlanta Open.
It was the 16th career Tour title for the towering 35-year-old from Greensboro, North Carolina. With his engine going at full throttle and serves keeping the speed gun in hyperactive mode, Isner followed up on his Atlanta showing with another run to the semifinal at the Canadian Open.
The towering American snared the likes of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Cristian Garin, Andrey Rublev and Gael Monfils on the way to reaching the last four in Toronto. However, he fell in straight sets to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev in the semifinal.
Coming into the Cincinnati Masters with a good head of momentum behind him, Isner reached the last 16 before going down fighting to veteran Frenchman Benoit Paire.
While the American, playing some of the best tennis he ever has, is in a good space to push for a maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open, he faces a familiar hurdle in Nakashima in the first round.
Tied 1-1 in the head-to-head tally, Isner will have to dig deep and follow the Atlanta template if he has to cross the Nakashima hurdle and reach the second round.

Nakashima Coming off Opening Cincinnati Defeat
Also a form player leading up to the all-important US Open, Nakashima has put himself in amongst the title challengers at the year’s last Grand Slam with blazing runs on the Tour in recent weeks.
Currently ranked 84th in singles, Nakashima played back-to-back finals at Los Cabos and Atlanta. Though both ended in defeats for the 20-year-old American, there was enough in performances to make a strong case for himself at the Flushing Meadows.
Following up on his runner-up finishes at Los Cabos and Atlanta, the San Diego-born Nakashima reached the last 16 at Washington Open.
Though he suffered a first-round exit at the Cincinnati Masters, the slip-up surely hasn’t dulled his prospects at his home Grand Slam.
However, he will have mixed feelings going into his opening clash with Isner at the Louis Armstrong Stadium tonight, having tasted both victory and defeat against the same opponent in recent weeks.
Isner v Nakashima Prediction and Tip
While there’s nothing to separate Isner and Nakashima in terms of head-to-head record, the former, one suspects, will have a slight edge in this opening-round clash as he lifted a title in one of the tune-up events going into the Slam. However, with Nakashima also in red-hot form, it will eventually come down to percentages.
