Simona Halep v Kristina Kucova Head to Head

She was handed the toughest opening round draw, and yet she came out with flying colours. The injury seems behind her now as a fit-again Halep held off the in-form Canadian Open champion Camila Giorgi in straight sets on Monday.
The Romanian got the only break of the first set at 4-4 and then went a break up in the second but couldn’t serve out the match at 5-4 and then failed to capitalise on two match points while serving at 6-5. Giorgi forced the tiebreak but was outscored by the former No. 1, who took the contest 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
Halep, who suffered a calf tear in Rome, was sidelined for close to three months before she made a comeback during the North American swing. She couldn’t pick up a win in Montreal, but got one in Cincinnati before withdrawing from the tournament with a thigh injury.
The World No. 13 wasn’t hampered by any of those injuries as she struck 14 winners and made just 16 unforced errors against the Italian’s 16 winners and 31 unforced errors. Halep, who converted all three of her break points, had a great service game, winning 83% points on the back of her first serve and serving six aces.
She will now be aiming to reach the third round for the first time since 2016. A U.S. Open semifinalist in 2015, Halep had reached the last eight in 2016, but lost in the opening rounds the following two years and and in the second round in 2019. The two-time major champion was absent from the tournament last year.

Lucky Loser Kucova Wins Her First Match at U.S. Open
She made the main draw as a lucky loser, yet dominated her opening round match against Ann Li, beating the American in straight sets.
The first set was a close one, with both players enjoying more than one break, but in the end it was the Slovak who got the vital third break to seal the first set 7-5. Having toughed it out in the first set, Kucova breezed past the American with three more breaks of serve for a 7-5, 6-1 victory in an hour and 19 minutes.
Ranked 111 in the world, Kucova had reached the Poland Open final last month and gave Ash Barty a scare in the second round in Miami.
On Monday, Kucova struck four less winners than her opponent’s 20, but also made 14 fewer unforced errors than Li’s 26.
The win was Kucova’s first at the U.S. Open. Her only previous appearance in 2016 had ended with a first-round defeat.

Halep will be extremely confident to have found form against a tough opponent. Expect her to keep the momentum going by progressing to the third round.
