Coming into this year’s US Open on the back of three successive defeats and having won just two matches spread over the last four tournaments, Alexandrova managed to stall that poor streak with a strong opening showing.
The Russian got the better of Sara Errani in her opener, defeating her 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 27 minutes to march into round two.
Alexandrova hit seven aces with nothing from Errani in return, and while she double-faulted 10 times and had a very poor, 56% first serve percentage, she did not allow Errani to win a single point on the Italian’s second serve.
The match had 10 breaks of serves in all, seven of which went in favour of Alexandrova. The Russian fell behind twice in the second set on account of her serve too but broke Errani three times in a row from 1-2 down to clinch the encounter.

Qualifier Rakhimova Stuns Mladenovic
Rakhimova made it to the main draw of this competition as a lucky loser after going down to Kristyna Pliskova in the final round of qualifiers.
And in her opener against Kristina Mladenovic, Rakhimova was 11/10 to overcome her opponent but when she went down a set, the Russian looked to be headed home.
Except, she did not. Rakhimova stormed back to register a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Mladenovic, needing two hours and 17 minutes to advance to the second round.
In doing so, Rakhimova also registered her maiden hard court competition victory in the main draw of such a tournament.
