Trungelliti Stuns Spanish Seed

Trungelliti only made it into the main draw in Flushing Meadows after coming through three rounds of qualifying and he was regarded as a complete underdog in his match with the world number 32, and number 29 seed, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

But he produced one of the surprises of the first round to beat him in five sets.

That seemed unlikely when he was the first to drop his serve in the first set. He recovered it, but was broken again as Davidovich-Fokina took the lead in the match.

But the Argentine recouped, and a solitary break was enough to earn him the second set.

The pair swapped breaks at the start of the third set, but another break allowed Trungelliti to take the lead for the first time in the match.

And he looked to have entered the final straight when he broke the Spaniard early in the fourth set. Davidovich-Fokina was not finished yet, though, and he broke serve himself, forcing a tie-break, which he eventually clinched.

Fortunes swung both ways in the fifth set, with the Spaniard dropping his serve, only to break back again.

But serving to stay in the match, Davidovich-Fokina faltered at the most inopportune time, offering up a break point which the Argentine converted to seal the victory.

Bagnis Starts with Easy Win

Bagnis was one of the first players to make it through to the second round after he enjoyed a very comfortable straight sets victory over the world number 106, Taro Daniel of Japan.

The first set saw the pair swap breaks at the midway mark, but then Daniel was broken again and the set belonged to the Argentine.

The second set went with serve until the Japanese dropped his serve once more, and then again, as Bagnis raced into a two set lead.

And an early break in the third put Bagnis completely in the driving seat. He broke again and, although Daniel recovered one of them, there was no way back for the Japanese, as Bagnis served out.

Trungelliti v Bagnis Prediction and Tip
