Angelique Kerber v Anhelina Kalinina Head to Head
Kalinina holds a 1-0 lead over Kerber, defeating her as recently as the French Open earlier in the season.

Kerber Aiming to Build on Recent Success
After spending the last couple of seasons battling inconsistencies and form woes, former World No. 1 Angelique Kerber is starting to find the way back to her glory days.
Following a poor start by her standards to the 2021 season, the 33-year-old German enjoyed a terrific resurgence on grass. She won the Bad Homburg Open in June, thus lifting her first winner’s trophy in two years. Kerber then reached the semifinal at Wimbledon where she ultimately fell to Ashleigh Barty.
That performance set the stage for the US Open series where Kerber continued to deliver in the same vein. She participated in the Cincinnati Masters where she fell to Barty once again in the semis, but not before upsetting Maria Sakkari, Elina Svitolina, and Petra Kvitova en route.
Here at Flushing Meadows, however, Kerber survived a major scare in her opening round bout against Dayana Yastremska. Call it nerves or Yastremska’s superior play, it was a shaky performance by the number 16 seed who ultimately took the match 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(3) in two hours and 28 minutes.

Kalinina, Junior US Open Finalist
Anhelina Kalinina’s current ranking as World No. 76 may not be that impressive yet but the fact that she has moved some 90 odd places since the start of the year is certainly worth noticing.
The 24-year-old Ukrainian has focussed mainly on the ITF circuit in a bid to develop some traction and experience – her efforts so far have translated into four finals on the circuit (three winners, one runner-up). Kalinina was also the finalist in the WTA Budapest Grand Prix where she succumbed to Yulia Putintseva.
However, since arriving in the States, her form has dipped significantly with back to back first-round exits in the Chicago Challenger and WTA events.
On Monday, she started her campaign in the US Open with a three-set win over Mayar Sherif.
Playing at the Flushing Meadows, the Ukrainian is in familiar territory having reached the final as a junior player in 2014. She has since then spent her time competing in the pro event but has never made it past the second round.
Kerber v Kalinina Prediction and Tip
This is going to be an interesting contest. When the two last met, Kerber wasn’t half the player she is right now. The German will start as the favourite but if it goes Kalinina’s way, it would not be an entirely surprising outcome.
