Number five seed Elina Svitolina kickstarted her campaign in the US Open with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Rebecca Marino.
The Ukrainian needed just a little over an hour to book her seat in the second round. She was particularly efficient in that game, dishing out just six unforced errors to Marino’s 21. However, her winners’ count could have been better (14 v 25).
The last time Svitolina played at the Flushing Meadows, she made it as far as the semis. In light of her recent form on the tour, her chances of repeating that feat do look promising.
She is coming fresh off a title run in the Chicago Open – her first trophy since the Strasbourg Open last year – after defeating Alize Cornet in the final. Earlier in the year, the 26-year-old also won a bronze medal at the Olympics and reached the semifinal in the Miami Open.

Masarova Slogs it Out in the Opener
22-year-old Rebeka Masarova is on a mission to make herself known and after that marathon opening match in the US Open, she has turned a few heads.
The 6ft tall player fought Ana Bogdan for three hours and 44 minutes to win the match where the three sets were decided on tie-breaks. In the final set tiebreak, Masarova saved two match points under pressure to keep her dream run alive. She ultimately took the match 6-7(9), 7-6(2), 7-6(9).
Starting as a qualifier, the #231st ranked Spaniard has delivered her best performance on the tour so far.
Masarova has focussed mainly on the ITF circuit in 2021 and her efforts have culminated in three singles titles and three doubles finals. It is also worth mentioning that at the start of the season, Masarova was ranked outside the top 700.
Svitolina v Masarova Prediction and Tip
Svitolina will start as the favourite but given Masarova’s height advantage and the pure grit she displayed in the opener against Bogdan, anything can happen. Masarova has enjoyed a meteoric ascend on the tour this season (40-8) and that just may be enough to overcome Svitolina’s impressive pedigree.
