Kohlschreiber Coming off Cilic Luck

Luck was on the German’s side on the opening day of the US Open as Cilic has to retire from the encounter after winning the opening two sets 7-6(4) 7-6(3), after that only winning 3 more games and retired 2-0 down in the fifth.

Nonetheless, the German was able to hit 21 aces, successfully saving 87% of break points he faced and holding serve 95% of the time, meaning chances to break were at a premium. Kohlschreiber sent down 67 winners compared to 30 errors, meaning not many presents were handed to the Croatian.

Now 37-years-old and ranked outside the top 100 despite being a former top-20 player, the German possesses a 9-9 W/L record for the year. His best result came on the grass of Halle, where he made the quarterfinals defeating Rodionov and Moutet in the opening rounds before losing to Rublev 7-6(4) 6-2.

Kohlschreiber will be looking to score his first win over the Spaniard since 2013, where he won 7-6(7) 6-2 in Doha. A victory will tie the H2H and set up a 3rd round encounter with either Koepfer or Medvedev.

The Spaniard was also to hit 51 winners past the Kazat and win 83% of his service games to eventually be to much to handle for Kukushkin. The epic encounter saw Andujar run over 7500 metres to secure his place in round 2.

Andujar currently holds a 12-15 W/L ratio for the year with only 2 wins on the hard courts throughout 2021. The former top 40’s best result came in Geneva on the clay, where he posted a victory over Roger Federer 6-4 4-6 6-4 in the second round. Andujar also beat Thompson and Stricker before losing to Ruud 6-3 6-2 in the semis.

The 35-year-old knows what it takes to beat the German and will be eager to make it 4-in-a-row to book his place in the third round.
