Harris Sends Khachanov Packing

Continuing to build on a solid year, Lloyd Harris advanced to the second round of the U.S. Open following a determined opening round effort that sent the Olympic silver medalist packing.

Harris got the only break of the first set to take a one-set-to-love lead, but Karen Khachanov responded with a double break of serve in the second and two breaks in the third to get his nose in front. The South African rebounded with the only break of serve in the fourth set and then raced away with the fifth for a 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win in three hours and seven minutes.

The South African served 20 aces and hit 46 winners compared to Khachanov’s 13 aces and 32 winners. However, Harris made four more unforced errors than the Russian’s 39.

It’s been a fascinating year for Harris, who reached a maiden ATP 500 final in Dubai and also broke into the top 50. His current form hasn’t been too bad either as he the 24-year-old reached the quarterfinals in Washington and the Round of 16 in Toronto.

Escobedo Off to a Flying Start

America’s Ernesto Escobedo needed just an hour and 29 minutes to outclass Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas in the first round of the U.S. Open on Tuesday.

Playing in the tournament for the fifth time, the 25-year-old broke his opponent six times while saving both the break points that he faced to ease into the next round with a 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 victory.

Escobedo hit six less winners than Cuevas’ 24, but made just eight unforced errors in the match compared to Cuevas’ 37.

Ranked 178th in the world, the American was a quarterfinalist in the hard court tournament in Los Cabos in July and most recently contested in the Lexington Challenger, reaching the semifinals.

Harris v Escobedo Prediction and Tip

Escobedo faced an easier opponent in the first round, who had lost the last five of his main draw matches. On Thursday, American faces a much tougher opponent in Harris, who outlasted the 25th seed. Expect the South African to keep the winning momentum going with a straight sets win.
