Svitolina Eases Past Qualifier Masarova
The Ukrainian notched her seventh win in a row as she eased past qualifier Rebeka Masarova in the second round on Wednesday.
Solid on her serve, Svitolina dropped just seven points in the entire match and didn’t allow her opponent a single break point. The Olympic bronze medallist also won 43% receiving points, breaking Masarova twice in the first set and once in the second to register a comfortable 6-2, 7-5 win in an hour and 15 minutes.
The World No. 5 was equally impressive in her first round match against Rebecca Marino, defeating the Canadian 6-2, 6-3 in just 63 minutes. She has been very disciplined over the last two matches, making just two double faults and 17 unforced errors combine in the first two rounds.
A semifinalist at the U.S. Open in 2019, Svitolina won her 16th career title and her first in 2021 at the Chicago Open last week. Having got into a great rhythm, she looks set for another deep run in the tournament.

Kasatkina Bounces Back to Beat Vondrousova
Daria Kasatkina continued her march forward at the U.S. Open with a gritty second round win over Olympic silver medallist Marketa Vondrousova.
The World No. 27 had little impact in the first set, with Vondrousova dominating with two breaks of serve. A set down, Kastakina began the second set with a break but was immediately broken back by the Czech. The Russian however got another break later in the set and then held serve to force the decider.
The third set began with five consecutive breaks of serve, with Kasatkina getting three of them. She protected her lead till the end, sealing the two-hour-and-17-minute contest 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Kasatkina had a relatively easier first round, defeating last year’s quarterfinalist Tsvetana Pironkova 6-2, 6-1 in just 64 minutes.
A four-time finalist this year, Kasatkina won the Phillip Island Trophy and the St. Petersburg Open. Her recent form, too, has been decent, reaching the final in San Jose and the quarterfinals in Cleveland.
