Novak Djokovic v Kei Nishikori Head to Head

Djokovic has a 17-2 record against the Japanese. The two times the Nishikori won were in Basel semifinal in 2011 and at the U.S. Open semifinal in 2014.  Apart from those two wins it’s been Djokovic all the way, with the most recent of those 17 wins coming at the Tokyo Olympics, which the Serbian won 6-2, 6-0.

Djokovic Takes Another Step Toward Calendar Slam

No disrespect to his first two opponents, but Djokovic faces his first real test in the quest for 21st Grand Slam on Saturday against Nishikori. The World No. 1, who had a set taken off him by 18-year-old Danish player Holger Rune in the first round, needed just an hour and 39 minutes to beat Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 6-2, 6-3, 6-2.

Striking 13 aces and 33 winners, the Serb dominated the proceedings from start to finish, breaking the Dutchman six times during the contest, while getting broken just once.

Against Rune, the three-time U.S. Open champion had struck 17 aces and 55 winners and converted 8 of 14 break points for a 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-1 victory.

Seeking to become the first man since 1969 to complete a Calendar Slam, Djokovic extended his unbeaten streak to 23 in the majors. Rod Laver, who also achieved the feat in 1962 remains the  last player to have won all the Grand Slams in a calendar year.

Nishikori Wins Thriller Against McDonald

Former World No. 4 Kei Nishikori won a thriller against Mackenzie McDonald, winning the up and down second round contest 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 2-6, 6-3.

After falling behind in the first two sets, the American made a valiant comeback effort but couldn’t keep the momentum going in the fifth as Nishikori broke him twice after getting broken in the first game of the final set on his way to the third round.

The U.S. Open brings the best out of Nishiskori, who was a finalist in 2014 and semifinalist in 2016 and 2018. Nishikori, who reached the fourth round of the French Open this year, began his campaign at Flushing Meadows with a 6-1, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 win over Italy’s Salvatore Caruso.

In the first round, Nishikori won 9 of 14 break points and struck 31 winners while making 37 unforced errors; while in the second round, both players enjoyed eight breaks each and struck 45 winners each, with McDonald making three fewer unforced errors at 54, yet ending up losing as the Japanese won the crucial moments in the contest.

Djokovic v Nishikori Prediction and Tip

Given how Djokovic has dominated this contest previously an upset seems highly unlikely. Expect the No. 1 to breeze past Nishikori into the fourth round.
