Angelique Kerber v Sloane Stephens Head to Head
This will be the sixth meeting between Kerber and Stephens, with the American leading the H2H 5-0, in fact, Kerber has never even won a set against Stephens. Their most recent encounter occurred in Shenzhen, 2018 where Stephens won 6-3 6-3.

Kerber Form Could Help Her Finally Win
It appears Kerber has regained her best tennis throughout the second half of the 2021 season and has made it through to the 3rd round, seeing off Kalinina 6-3 6-2. Kerber was able to win 71% of her first-serve points and capitalize on 5/6 break-point opportunities to give the Ukrainian little look in.
Winning a staggering 61% of return points and crushing down 23 winners, she eased her way into the round-of-32 to set up a tie with Stephens.
The German possesses an impressive 25/12 W/L for the year after posting an impressive grass-court season, winning Bad Homburg, and reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon. Her run at Bad Homburg included impressive wins over Anisimova and Kvitova, before defeating Siniakova 6-3 6-2 in the final.
The former world number one navigated her way past Stojanovic, Sorribes-Tormo, Sasnovich, Gauff, and Muchova before losing out to eventual champion Ashleigh Barty 6-3 7-6(3).
The 33-year-old approaches this tie yet to win a set of her opponent, however, in impressive form, she has the ability to end this streak of losses she has suffered at the hands of Stephens.

Stephens Enjoys the Kerber Match-Up
Stephens wasn’t handed the nicest draw, facing two tough compatriots in her opening rounds: Keys and Gauff. She successfully passed both tests, most recently defeating Gauff 6-4 6-2. Stephens recorded an impressive 83% first serve percentage, winning 80% of points behind this delivery. As a result, she was not broken the entire match. Winning 60% of the points, Stephens secured her place in the 3rd round.
The American hasn’t had the best hard-court season, winning only 5 matches on the surface, however, after an impressive clay-court season, she has carried her form over to New York.
The 28-year-old made the semi-finals of Parma back in May, defeating McNally, Kasatkina, and Errani, before losing to 6-2 7-6(3) to Wang. Other impressive results on the clay include the quarterfinals of Charleston and the 4th round of the French Open.
The former top 3 player clearly enjoys the match-up with Kerber and will hope to keep the perfect record going. Previous encounters will give her plenty of confidence to play well and give herself a chance to advance to the 4th round to face either Fernandez or Osaka.
Kerber v Stephens Prediction and Tip
It is likely that this will be a close encounter, however, Kerber is the slight favourite to book her place in the 4th round due to her impressive counterpunching.
