Two breaks down in the final set, Rogers was on the brink of elimination at 2-5, but the American fought back from nowhere to knock out the World No. 1 and Wimbledon champion Ashleigh Barty in one of the most entertaining matches at the U.S. Open.
A quarterfinalist in the New York major last year, Rogers is now one win away from equalling her last year’s effort. She began the third round well, taking advantage of Barty’s loose play and breaking the Australian twice to take the first set in just 32 minutes.
Barty eliminated the errors from her game in the second and began dominating the contest. She broke Rogers twice to take the match into the decider. Having got into a good rhythm, Barty continued to soar in the third, going a double break up for a 5-2 lead, but despite being in the position of ascendancy, she just couldn’t close out the contest, thanks to a combination of a double fault, a flurry of mishits and Rogers’ determination to reach every ball.
Having forced the tiebreak, Rogers went toe-to-toe with the No. 1, with both holding serve for the first 10 points, before Barty hit one long to drop a point on her serve and allow Rogers a match point. The World No. 43 induced another error of Barty and stood in disbelief having pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament.
Rogers had dominated the first two rounds, defeating Madison Brengle 6-4, 6-0 in the first and Sorana Cirstea 7-5, 6-2 in the second round. The 28-year-old had come into the tournament in terrible form having won just one match in the previous four tournaments, but she has raised her game in the Grand Slams this year (fourth round in Melbourne and third round at Wimbledon), and continues to do so in New York.

Raducanu Decimates Sorribes Tormo
For anyone who thought Wimbledon was a fluke, Raducanu’s proved them wrong in New York, as the 18-year-old flew past another opponent to reach the second week of a second consecutive Grand Slam.
Yet to drop a set on her U.S. Open debut, the World No. 150 decimated Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-0, 6-1 in an hour and 10 minutes in the third round on Saturday. Hitting 23 winners against 5 from the Spaniard, Raducanu converted five of 11 break points in the match, while not allowing the World No. 41 any.
A finalist at the Chicago Challenger a couple of weeks back, the Briton won her qualifying rounds with ease and then kept the momentum going with straight sets wins over Stefanie Vögele in the first round and Zhang Shuai in the next.
Making her Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon, Raducanu had reached the fourth round by beating the likes of Marketa Vondrousova and Sorana Cirstea before having to withdraw from her fourth round contest against Ajla Tomljanovic due to a medical issue. She will be hoping to reach her maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal with a win on Monday.

The manner in which she toppled the top seed makes Rogers a favourite to win this contest. Raducanu has been in sensational form and has destroyed her opponents so far, so she is a force to reckon with, but Rogers should still make it to the quarterfinals.
