Tamara Zidansek v Cristiana Ferrando Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 23-year old Slovenian, and the Italian, who is three years older.

Zidansek, Winner of the Swiss Open

Zidansek has enjoyed a fine year on her favourite surface of clay. In April she reached her second senior career final, losing to the Spaniard Maria Camila Osorio Serano in the Copa Colsanitas in Columbia.

And then in July she enjoyed success for the first time, when she won the Swiss Open in Lausanne, beating Clara Burel of France in the final.

And sandwiched in the middle of those two events was the French Open, where she got to the semi-finals, by far and away her best showing in a Grand Slam.

Her form on other surfaces has been less assured though. She lost her only match on grass at Wimbledon, and she was beaten in the first round in both Cincinnati and Chicago.

At the US Open, she did manage an opening round victory over the American Bernarda Pera, but then was well-beaten in straight sets by the world number two Arnya Sabalenka.

Italian Qualifier Ferrando

Ferrando made her senior tour debut at the 2016 Guangzhou International as a lucky loser, but as a player who has never been ranked higher than 268 in the world, she mainly spends her time on the ITF circuit.

There she has appeared in the 12 finals, winning four of them, although it has been four years since her last victory  at the Challenger de Granby in Canada.

However, she has enjoyed better success in doubles, winning in Jonkoping in Sweden in June with partner Oana Georgeta Simion of Romania.

Entered in the qualification tournament in Portoroz, she earned her spot against Zidansek with a hard fought win over Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove of the Netherlands, the world number 148.

She had a terrible start, losing the first set to love, but then fought back to win the second set, and then the third as well, in a match that lasted over two hours.

Zidansek v Ferrando Prediction and Tip

With 278 places separating them in terms of world ranking, it would be a shock if there were anything other than an easy victory for Zidansek.
