The top seed, currently ranked World No. 12, is coming off a terrific run on the tour which comprises an Olympic Gold and Silver, and back to back quarterfinal appearances in the Cincinnati Open and US Open.
In New York, the 24-year-old Swiss was on track to reach the semis but was stopped by the eventual champion Emma Raducanu.
Nonetheless, the Bett1Open and Adelaide International runner-up is one of the strongest players in the field in Luxembourg. Should she survive Diyas, standing in her way potentially would be then Liudmila Samsonova and Alize Cornet en route to the final.

Diyas Survives Schmiedlova
Zarina Diyas had to work hard to win her opening-round bout against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in Luxembourg. The 27-year-old Kazakh battled for a little over two hours to reach round two with 6-0, 1-6, 6-4.
Currently ranked World No. 105, Diyas’ recent results on the tour have been less than impressive. In the US Open, she fell in the first round to Amanda Anisimova while in the Chicago Open, she cleared the qualifiers but only to lose to Kristina Mladenovic in the opening main draw match.
Diyas started the year inside the top 100 (as World No. 80 to be more precise) but has since fallen out. Her season highlights include reaching the third round in the Australian Open, Phillip Island Trophy, and Ladies Open Lausanne.

There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that Bencic will start as the favourite. She has the pedigree and history on her side to reach the quarterfinal comfortably unless of course, she succumbs to a shock upset like many have in her place on the WTA Tour.
