Mager Happier on Clay
Mager has reached a career high singles ranking after his best ever season on tour so far, even if he has not yet been able to add to his one previous fianl appearance, which came at the Rio Open last February, where he was beaten by Christian Garin.
However, a win on the Challenger tour in Marbella in April helped propel him up the rankings, and since then there have been third round appearances in Serbia, and Kitzbuhel.
Like most Italians though, he has been brought up on clay, and his best results have come on it.
That means that he tends to struggle when adapting to other surfaces as evidenced by his results recently on the hard courts of America. He failed to quality for Cincinnati, got to the second round in Winston Salem, and suffered an opening round defeat at the US Open, losing to Jordan Thompson in five sets.

Basilashvili Twice a Winner in 2021
Earlier this year, Basilashvili won two titles, clinching the Qatar Open on hard courts, and the Bavarian Championships on clay, bringing his career haul of senior victories to five on the ATP tour.
Since then, he has achieved mixed success, with early exits in Madrid, Rome and the French Open, followed by a run to the semi-finals in Halle. However, he was then beaten in the first round of Wimbledon by Andy Murray.
After getting to the third round of the Olympics, he travelled to the US for the North American hard court swing, where again he enjoyed variable fortunes, reaching the third round in Toronto, but crashing out at the first round stage in Cincinnati.
His last tournament was the US Open, where he faced three successive American opponents. He beat Sebastian Korda when the latter was forced to retire from their match with injury, and eased past Maxime Cressy in straight sets.
However, the big serving Reilly Opelka proved too strong for him, and he suffered a straight set defeat.
Mager v Basilashvili Prediction and Tip
Basilashvili is the higher ranked player, the seed, and more at home on hard courts, so he will start the clear favourite.
