Maria Sakkari v Jelena Ostapenko Head to Head

They are 1-1 from their previous two meetings. Ostapenko won at Charleston in 2017, while Sakkari won at the Australian Open in 2019.

Sakkari Looking to Reach a Seventh Quarterfinal

Maria Sakkari will be in action for the first time since her semifinal exit from the U.S. Open two weeks ago. The fourth seed Greek, who received a first-round bye, will be looking to reach a seventh quarterfinal this season. She made it through to the semis on five of the six previous last eight appearances this year, however, she is 0-5 in the semis this season.

And it was the final four stage that she lost to Victoria Aazrenka in Ostrava last year.

A one-time champion on the tour, Sakkari climbed to a career-high ranking of No. 12 following her U.S. Open exploits. She comes into the tournament with a 31-15 season record, an indication of how good the season has been for her so far.

She reached the semifinals in Miami for the first time and made her final four debut at Grand Slams in Roland Garros, before reaching a second major semifinal at Flushing Meadows only to fall to eventual champion Emma Raducanu in straight sets.

The 26-year-old, who doesn’t have a losing record on any of the surfaces, is 21-10 on hard courts this year and will be looking to improve on that record in her opening round match at Ostrava.

Ostapenko Makes Quick Work of Blinkova

A finalist in Luxembourg last week, Ostapenko seems to have carried that form to Ostrava, as she got off to a brisk start with a 6-4, 6-0 first-round win over Russia’s Anna Blinkova on Wednesday.

The first set was a close one with both player getting multiple breaks, but the Latvian ran away with the second, bagelling the Russian.

Ostapenko broke her opponent thrice in each set, while saving two of the four break points that she faced in the match.

The 2017 French Open champion, who is solid on all surfaces, improved to 28-16 this season, which included a fourth career title that she capture in Eastbourne and a 10th career final last week.

Ostapenko was brilliant throughout last week, but couldn’t find a way to beat Danish teenager Clara Tauson in the final.

On Thursday, she will be hoping to improve on her 11-9 hard court record this season and reach the quarterfinals for the fourth time this season.

Sakkari v Ostapenko Prediction and Tip

Sakkari faces a very tough opponent up front, but given the way the Greek has played this season, expect her to advance. Although Ostapenko will ensure this contest goes the distance.
