Alexander Bublik v Soonwoo Kwon Head to Head

The pair have never played each other. This will be the first match between the 23 year-old South Korean, and the Kazakh, who is a year older.

Surprise Semi-Finalist Kwon

There had been little in Kwon’s form leading up to this tournament to suggest that he had a semi-fianl run in him, although he had gained some confidence playing and winning matches for his country in Davis Cup last week.

However, the way he beat Evgeny Domsky of Russia and then the number three sees Dusan Lajovic of Serbia, both in straight sets, did not give any hints that this was a man struggling for form.

He faced another Serb in the quarter-fianl on Friday, in the shape of Laslo Djere, the world number 49, and number seven seed, in a match of fluctuating fortunes.

The first set saw the pair swap breaks and then again, before it went to a tie-break.

Five of the opening six points of that went against serve, but Kwon proved to be ultimately the stronger, and he took the set.

Lajovic was the first to drop his serve in the second set, only for Kwon’s form to temporarily desert him, and three successive breaks against him enabled Lajovic to level the match.

At that point the Serb was the favourite to win, but then he imploded and did not win another game all match, as Kwon romped through the third set claiming it for love.

Bublik Chasing Maiden Tour Win

Bublik is still chasing his first senior singles success, having been beaten in four finals, including two in 2021. In Antalya and Singapore at the start of the year.

And he was also beaten in the finals of the doubles at the French Open.

For Bublik, who was born in Russia but now represents Kazakhstan, it would give him great satisfaction if he could break that duck on “home” soil.

He was given a bye in the first round but then overcame the challenge of Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia, despite dropping the first set to the world number 60.

That earned him a quarter-fianl tie against the Spanish clay court specialist Carlos Taberner, and that proved to be a more straightforward victory for Bublik.

One break in each set was enough to give him the win, facing just one break point against his own serve all match.

Bublik v Kwon Prediction and Tip

Kwon has done well to get this far, but the incentive for Bublik to get to the fianl and potentially win his first ATP title on home soil is immense. He will not want to let this opportunity pass him by.
