Hubert Hurkacz v Peter Gojowczyk Head to Head

Hurkacz beat Gojowczyk in their only meeting at the U.S. Open last year.

Hurkacz Beats Murray Again

A month after defeating Andy Murray in the Round of 32 in Cincinnati, Hubert Hurkacz defeated the former No. 1 once again, in the quarterfinal in Metz on Friday, to take a 2-0 lead in the head-to-head series.

One similarity between the two matches: Hurkacz won both the matches with an identical score of 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

Friday’s win improved Hurkacz’s season record to 27-16 and earned him a fourth semifinal berth this season. He went on to win the titles in Delray Beach and Miami and finished as a semifinalist at Wimbledon, his maiden final four appearance at a major.

The first set in the quarterfinal was a very close affair with Hurkacz having to save three break points in the eighth game to get out of the jail. The set eventually needed a tiebreak to separate the two, with the Pole taking a sizeable early lead before sealing the set.

With the first set in the bag, the World no. 13 raced away with the second to clinch the contest in an hour and 50 minutes.

Hurkacz served 13 aces against Murray’s 3, converted 1 of 3 break points and saved all the four that he faced to notch his second win of the tournament. On Thursday, Hurkacz had beaten France’s Lucas Pouille 6-2, 6-3. Can he keep the form going in the semis and reach a fourth career final and a third this year?

Gojowczyk Rebounds to Send Giron Packing

Peter Gojowczyk’s only career title came in Metz in 2017. Four years on, he is just two wins away from clinching his second title.

On Friday, the German fought back from a set down to end American Marcos Giron’s challenge in the quarterfinals.

Having conceded a break in the fourth game of the first set, Gojowczyk saved three set points on his serve at 2-5, but couldn’t save the fourth in the next game to fall a set behind.

The German came back with a vengeance in the second set, taking a 5-0 lead before eventually winning it 6-1. He continued his dominance in the third, breaking Giron two more times and wrapping up the one-hour-and-23-minute contest 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

Overall Gojowczyk served 12 aces and won 86% first serve points on his way to a second semifinal of the season. Earlier he had reached the stage in Montpellier, having qualified for the tournament.

He made it to the main draw in Mets through the qualifiers as well, and Friday’s win was his fifth consecutive victory. The 32-year-old, who is 13-7 in the main draws this season, had beaten French lucky loser Antoine Hoang 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in the first round and seventh seed Karen Khachanov 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) in the second round on Thursday.

The German’s win over Hoang was his second over the same opponent in two days, as he had beaten the Frenchman in the second qualifying round to make it to the main draw. Gojowczyk had defeated another Frenchman, Luca Van Assche, in the first qualifying round on Sunday.

Gojowczyk has been in hot form recently and a run from qualifiers to the fourth round of the U.S. Open testifies that. He will be looking to reach a second Metz final on Saturday.

Hurkacz v Gojowczyk Prediction and Tip

This will be an interesting contest. Gojowczyk is a difficult player to beat and he will test Hurkacz. However, expect the Polish player to eventually win the contest, possibly in three.
