38-year-old Kim Clijsters officially returned to the tour last year in WTA Dubai, but a pandemic-struck season didn’t do much for her form.
After just a handful of tournaments, the Belgian found some tennis action at the US Open – a tournament that she has conquered thrice in her career. But this time around, things went differently as she fell to Ekaterina Alexandrova in three sets in the opener. Shortly thereafter, Clijsters underwent knee surgery and spent the rest of the year (and this season) recuperating.
Now in Chicago, she is set to compete in her first tennis tournament of the year – and her fourth one since retiring from the scene back in 2012 August.
While Clijsters may lack momentum and form at the moment – and may also find it difficult to reach the latter rounds – the former World No. 1 has a great deal of experience and pedigree on her side which stretches across 8 Grand Slam finals and 52 WTA career finals.

Hsieh, Coming Off an Early Exit in New York
Doubles veteran Su-Wei Hsieh will be participating in the Chicago Open after a second-round exit in the US Open last month to Sara Sorribes Tormo. Interestingly, the Taiwanese had lost in the same round in the WTA 250 Chicago as well – that time to Tereza Martincova.
Similar results mark her entire year on the WTA singles tour, with the notable exception of the Australian Open. Hsieh reached the quarterfinal there to deliver her best major performance.
As a doubles player, she is the current World No. 4, courtesy of her title run in Wimbledon with Elise Mertens and the quarterfinal run at the Flushing Meadows. Hsieh can tap into this experience and hope to start her Chicago campaign on a winning note.
Hsieh v Clijsters Prediction and Tip
Both players are quite experienced, making this an interesting battle to follow. Clijsters has got a good chance here to pick up a win against an out of form player; the same can be said of Hsieh too. In many ways, this is an evenly matched fixture that can very well go either way.
