Sloane Stephens v Tamara Zidansek Head to Head

The two players met as recently as the WTA Rome qualifiers in 2021; Zidansek won that match in straight sets.

Zidansek, Enjoying the Best Season of her Career

23-year-old Tamara Zidansek is the current World No. 33. It is her best singles ranking yet – a feat she achieved on the back of a pretty solid season which entails two WTA singles finals.

In April, she was the runner-up at the Copa Colsanitas where she lost to Maria Camila Osorio Serrano; in July, she went the distance to lift her first singles trophy on the WTA Tour after upsetting Clara Burel in the Swiss Open Lausanne.

But her most impressive performance undoubtedly came in the French Open where she reached the semifinal after toppling Bianca Andreescu, Madison Brengle, Katerina Siniakova, Sorana Cirstea, and Paula Badosa. Even though Zidansek ultimately succumbed to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, that scintillating run propelled her from the mid-80s to the top 50 in the singles ranking.

In her more recent weeks, the Slovenian hasn’t been this impressive. The number 13 seed last featured in her home tournament of WTA Portoroz where she lost in the quarterfinals.

Stephens Eyeing Comeback in Chicago

Former top 10 player Sloane Stephens continues to find the way back to her winning days. The American is seeking her first singles title since the 2018 Miami Open – that very year, Stephens reached three other finals on the tour but failed to convert the runs into a title.

Three years on, she finds herself in a seemingly endless battle with inconsistencies and form woes. The highlights of her present year came on clay-court tournaments as she reached the quarters in WTA Charleston, semis in WTA Parma, and the fourth-round in the French Open. Unfortunately, Stephens couldn’t carry the same momentum forward.

In the US Open series, the two-time Grand Slam finalist featured in San Jose, Montreal, Cincinnati, and Flushing Meadows. Her best run among the four came in the last as she reached the third round and fell to Angelique Kerber.

Zidansek v Stephens Prediction and Tip

On paper, it is quite evident that Zidansek will start as the favourite but the current world number 54 can’t be underestimated. All things considered, Stephens has a much superior pedigree to her Slovenian adversary and may very well cause the upset here.

Expect an entertaining game of tennis where Zidansek is likely to come out as the winner.
