Mertens, with a Bye into Round Two
World No. 18 Elise Mertens is starting in the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic with a bye into the second round as the number seven seed.
She last played in the Luxembourg Open where she made it as far as the quarterfinal before losing to Marketa Vondrousova. The Belgian No. 1 has enjoyed a decent year so far, boasting figures of 31-17 (19-8 on hard courts). Her highlights include winning the Gippsland Trophy and settling for the runner-up feat in the Istanbul Cup.
As a doubles player, her exploits are far more impressive as she won the major doubles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, along with winning the same trophy in Istanbul.
Admittedly, her form in the recent few weeks hasn’t been this impressive with her best showing coming in the US Open where she reached the fourth round. Nonetheless, she remains a formidable opponent who can very well have a deep run here in Chicago.

Yastremska Ousts Cornet in the Opener
Dayana Yastremska was well on way to reach the upper echelons of the tennis world before her career was derailed by a provisional suspension for doping in January. It wasn’t until June that the ban was lifted and the Ukrainian was cleared of all charges, making her eligible to compete on the WTA Tour again.
The 21-year-old’s portfolio entails four singles finals (the most recent one being the 2020 Adelaide International). She is also the junior Wimbledon finalist and has six ITF finals to her name.
On the back of this pedigree, Yastremska began her 2021 season in the Hamburg European Open where she reached the semifinal. Since then, however, the current World No. 72 has lost the opening-round matches in five of her last six tournaments, spanning across the Olympics, WTA San Jose, Montreal Open, Cincinnati Open, US Open, and WTA Portoroz.
Here in Chicago, she did well to make amends for that by moving past Alize Cornet in the opener. Needing just an hour and 37 minutes, Yastremska defeated the Frenchwoman 7-5, 6-1 without a lot of difficulties.
Mertens v Yastremska Prediction and Tip
Yastremska is a talented player capable of punching above her weight. Mertens hasn’t been entirely consistent of late and she may run into problems when facing the unseeded Ukrainian. Expect an entertaining tennis match.
