Denis Shapovalov v Taylor Fritz Head to Head

Shapovalov leads 3-1 head to head but the Canadian is 0-1 this year, having lost their only meeting of the season in Doha in straight sets.

Form a Concern for Shapovalov

The World No. 13 brings a 24-19 season record to San Diego. Seeded fourth, Shapovalov received a first-round bye and will begin his campaign in the Round of 16 on Thursday, hoping to reach a seventh quarterfinal this season.

Runner-up in Geneva, the 22-year-old delivered his best ever Grand Slam performance at Wimbledon, reaching a maiden semifinal, but since then Shapovalov has struggled for form and consistency. The left-hander has won just two of his last seven matches, with both those victories coming at the U.S. Open, before he was sent packing by Lloyd Harris in straights sets.

Most recently, at the Laver Cup, he could win just four games in his singles match against Daniil Medvedev, losing to the Russian 6-4, 6-0.

Current form may not be encouraging, but Shapovalov is a difficult player to beat on hard courts, where he has a 93-74 career record.

It will be interesting to see if the Canadian can overcome the recent slump and string a few wins together in San Diego. The problem is he faces a very tough opponent in his opening match.

Fritz Dumps Out Qualifier Caruso

World No. 39 Taylor Fritz improved to 22-17 this year with a straight sets win over Italian qualifier Salvatore Caruso in the first round.

The American didn’t face a single break point in the match, and converted one of the three breaking opportunities to win the one hour and 43 minute battle 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).

Fritz, who reached back-to-back semifinals in Los Cabos and Atlanta in July, lost the winning touch since being handed his fourth semifinal defeat of the season in Atlanta. Since then he won just one match at the U.S. Open and came to San Diego with a 1-5 record from the last six matches.

The 23-year-old, who prefers playing on hard courts, will be happy to have safely sailed through to the second round. Now the challenge will be to win two in a row.

Against a top 15 player, things will be a bit difficult, but he will look to draw inspiration from his quarterfinal win over Shapovalov in Doha this year, when he came back from a set down to beat the Canadian. The fact that Shapovalov’s current form is not great will be even more encouraging for Fritz, who will fancy his chances against the fourth seed.

Shapovalov v Fritz Prediction and Tip

Both players are trying to regain the form that saw them make deep runs multiple times this year. Expect a very close contest, with Shapovalov edging out the American.
