Benoit Paire v James Duckworth Head to Head
Paire and Duckworth have never been involved in a career, head-to-head meeting before. While they registered contrasting wins to reach the second round at Sofia, the first-ever head-to-head clash between these two seasoned stars promises to be an absorbing affair.

Paire Overcomes Davidofich Fokina in Opener
Coming into the Sofia Open on the back of two straight first-round defeats at the US Open and the Astana Open, Paire came to Sofia in the quest of rediscovering the form that took him to back-to-back quarter-finals at the Berlin Open and Swiss Open as well as the last eight of the prestigious Cincinnati Masters.
Opening his campaign against a difficult opponent in Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain, the 49th-ranked Frenchman seemed to playing somewhere close to the level that helped him to some strong finishes this season.
Imposing himself on his opponent early in the piece, Paire dominated the early passage of play and was duly rewarded with a break of serve.
Having bagged the opening set, the wily, old Frenchman demonstrated finesse coupled with occasional bursts of sumptuous power play to eventually come through by a comfortable margin of 6-4, 7-5.
Up next for the 32-year-old Frenchman is in-form Australian James Duckworth. Currently ranked a shade above Paire in singles, the Aussie is come off a runner-up finish at Astana and finished on the opening side of his first-round clash in the Bulgarian capital.
Not having played him before, the Frenchman will trust his own instincts and skill-sets more than his opponent’s weaknesses to get over the line.

Duckworth Surprises Ruusuvuori
Taking the confidence from a sensational campaign at Astana, which saw him come within a match of lifting his maiden Tour title, Duckworth came into the Sofia Open sky-high on confidence.
Though he fell at the final hurdle in Astana against eventual champion Kwon Soon-woo of South Korea, his run to final itself gave him enough momentum going into his tournament opener in Bulgaria against rising Finnish star Emil Ruusuvuori.
While it was the Finn who bossed the run of play in the opening set and ended up winning it by a comfortable margin, the Aussie dug deep to dig himself out of a hole.
Engineering a remarkable turnaround after going down tamely in the first set, Duckworth won the next two by comfortable margins to eventually cruise home 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The Aussie faces a tough outing in his next against maverick Frenchman Benoit Paire. While Paire’s tennis could, at the best of times, be as volatile as his temperament, nothing short of the repeating the template that helped him to a win over Russuvuori would do for Duckworth against the Frenchman in this second-round tie.
Paire v Duckworth Prediction and Tip
Current form and run of results does put Duckworth at a slight advantage going into this second-round clash with Paire, but the Frenchman, as he has shown on numerous occasions in his career, could be literally unstoppable on his day.
