Starting with a bye into the second round, top seed Elina Svitolina started her WTA 500 Chicago Open journey with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Amanda Anisimova in the opener. The Ukrainian needed just an hour and 20 minutes to seal the match and reach the third round.
Having won the WTA 250 edition of the tournament around the same time last month (defeating Alize Cornet in the final), Svitolina will certainly fancy her chances of delivering the exact outcome once again. That said, the draw is far more competitive this time around.
The current World No. 6 didn’t feature in any of the European tournaments over the last couple of weeks and stayed in the States following her quarterfinal appearance in the US Open, where she was stunned by Leylah Fernandez in an epic three-setter.
The Olympic bronze medalist may have won just one singles title this season, but that hasn’t stopped her from cementing herself in the top 10 (currently at #6 position). Svitolina has reached the penultimate rounds in several tournaments like WTA Abu Dhabi, Gippsland Trophy, Qatar Open, Miami Open, Stuttgart Open, among others.

Ruse, Looking to Make Waves
At first look, Elena-Gabriela Ruse may not seem like that formidable of an opponent but when we look at the stunning progress she has made in 2021, a different picture emerges.
She started the year as World No. 164 and later dropped down to the late 190s on the back of uneventful performances. It all changed in the Hamburg European Open where the 23-year-old Romanian reached her first singles final, as a qualifier, and ended up winning the title. Along the way, she defeated the likes of Danielle Collins, Jil Teichmann, Dayana Yastremska, and Andrea Petkovic.
In the subsequent tournament of WTA Palermo, she delivered a similar performance – all the way from the qualifiers. This time, she fell to Collins in the final but owing to these two runs, she got into the top 100.
Currently ranked World No. 98, Ruse has so far in Chicago defeated Camila Giorgi and Kateryna Kozlova in straight sets to reach round three.
Svitolina v Ruse Prediction and Tip
Ruse is a promising tennis starlet but is still inexperienced in many ways. Nonetheless, she has displayed a strong tendency to win and may make life difficult for Svitolina.
The Ukrainian will start as the favourite and should overcome the hurdles to reach the quarterfinals.
