Elise Mertens v Danielle Collins Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, at Wimbledon in 2018, Mertens winning in straight sets.

Collins Pushed Hard by Japanese Player

Collins has already played and seen off the challenge of one Belgian this week, defeating the veteran qualifier Kirsten Flipkens in straight sets in the first round.

That earned her a second round match with Misaki Doi of Japan, and the player ranked world number 111 proved to be an unexpectedly obdurate opponent.

Collins forced an early break but then Doi hit back with tow breaks of her own, to claim the first set.

The American thought she had regained control of proceedings when she went a double break up in the second set, only to allow Doi yet again to level by dropping her own serve twice in a row, This time though, she forced another break of her own, and the match was soon all-square.

Again, though she did not make it easy for herself by becoming the first woman to drop her serve in the third set, but, fortunately for her, Doi could not take advantage, and she was broken in turn.  The pair swapped breaks again, but Collins finally got her nose in front when she broke the Japanese one more time.

Even then the job was not done and it took her four match points to finally book her spot to play Mertens.

Mertens Looking to Find Her Best Form Again

Mertens began the year strongly, winning her sixth senior career title in Melbourne at the Gippsland Trophy and then finishing runner-up in the Istanbul Cup two months later.

However, her greatest successes in 2021 have come in doubles – she became the number one ranked player in May for the first time and, with different partners, won the Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

However, she has been searching for her best form on a singles court recently, having suffered the disappointment of an early loss in the Luxembourg Open, which was almost a home event for her because of its geographical proximity.

Given a first-round bye in Chicago, she met the Ukrainian  Dayana Yastremska in the second round on Tuesday, the world number 72.

The Belgian dominated her 21-year old opponent from the start, breaking her in the opening game of the match. Two more breaks helped her romp through the first set.

And another early break in the second set out Mertens in complete control. The Ukrainian saved one match point on her own serve, but Mertens served out next game.

Mertens v Collins Prediction and Tip

Mertens may not be in the best of form just now, but she will still start favourite against Collins who had struggles of her own in her second round match.
