Gael Monfils v Gianluca Mager Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 35-year old Frenchman and the Italian, who is nine years younger.

Monfils Yet to Pick Up His Racquet in Anger

Monfils finds himself in the quarter-finals without one wielding his racquet in anger in Sofia.

That is because he was given a first round bye, and then a walkover after his prospective opponent Ilya Ivashka of Belarus the world number 45 pulled out of their much awaited second round clash with an injury.

And perhaps the number two seed may be relieved as he was the slight underdog in that match according to the bookmakers.

It means that he is now one match away from emulating his achievement last week when he got to the semi-finals of the Moselle Open, and, with the bottom half of the draw in Sofia not particularly strong, he may already be eyeing Sunday’s final.

Mager Makes Solid Progress Through to the Last Eight

By contrast, Mager has had to work much harder for his place in the last eight, by beating two higher ranked players, starting with another Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, the world number 54, who he beat in straight sets on Monday.

Then on Wednesday he faced Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia, currently ranked 62nd in the world, and also beat him without dropping a set.

The first set between the two was very even and when Kecmanovic dropped his serve, he hit back to level straightaway, meaning that a tie-break was needed to separate them.

The Italian proved much the stronger of the two on the pressure points and he duly took it.

The second set went wit serve until the ninth game when Kecmanovic was broken. And any hopes that he had of hauling himself back into the match were ended when he dropped his serve again when serving to stay in it.

Monfils v Mager Prediction and Tip

Fortune has favoured Monfils so far in Sofia, but he should be able to get past Mager without relying on luck.
