Top seed Elina Svitolina cruised into the quarterfinal with a straight sets win over Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the Round of 16 on Thursday.
The Ukrainian, who began the tournament with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over America’s Amanda Anisimova in the second round, needed an hour and 48 minutes to beat the Romanian 6-3, 6-3.
Svitolina had 16 chances to break Ruse’s serve in the match and she could capitalise on just four of those chances. However, her opponent held three break points and Svitolina saved two of them.
The World No. 6, who won her only title of the season at the Chicago Women’s Open just before the start of the U.S. Open, has extended her streak in Chicago to seven wins this season. She had won the Chicago Open by defeating Alize Cornet in the final.
The Olympic bronze medallist will be featuring in a 10th quarterfinal of the season on Friday. Most recently she reached the last eight of the U.S. Open before being knocked out by Leylah Fernandez in a high-intensity contest.
She will be looking to reach a fifth semifinal with a win over Jabeur on Friday.

Jabeur Fights Back to Beat Pegula
Sixth seed Ons Jabeur came back from a set down to defeat America’s Jessica Pegula in the Round of 16 on Thursday.
Jabeur, who had breezed past Hsieh Su-wei 6-1, 6-0 in the second round, lost the first set 1-6 on Thursday, but the Tunisian made a resounding comeback winning the next two for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 win in an hour and 34 minutes.
With the win, Jabeur got her revenge over the American, who had beaten her in the Cincinnati quarterfinal this year. In that match, the Tunisian had won the first set 1-6, before being eliminated by Pegula.
Jabeur, ranked No. 16 in the world, converted four of five break points and saved five of eight in the match on Thursday.
The Tunisian will be playing in a sixth quarterfinal of the season on Friday and will be aiming to reach the semis for the fourth time this year. She won her maiden title at Birmingham this year and finished runner-up in Charleston.
Svitolina v Jabeur Prediction and Tip
Svitolina has won 10 of her last 11 matches and the top seed could win her 39th match of the year on Friday. Expect the Ukrainian to advance, but she may need three sets to dispatch Jabeur.
