Gael Monfils v Marcos Giron Head to Head

The pair have never before. This will be the first match between the 35-year old Frenchman, and the American, who is seven years younger.

Monfils finally saw some action in Bulgaria on Friday, having received a bye in the first round and then profited from a walkover in the second.

And he made short work of Gianluca Mager of Italy, the world number 78, in  a match that lasted less than an hour.

Mager was under pressure almost from the start and, having already saved three break points, he was broken by Monfils, and then again by Monfils who was barely breaking sweat.

Monfils saved the only break point on his own serve at the start of the second set, and them secured a break of his own, going on to dominate the second set in similar fashion to the first. Another break earned him the match.

Giron Continues His Winning Run Against Australians

Giron has been a regular quarter-finalist in recent months, bit now he has gone one better in Sofia.

Having already beaten the number three seem Alex de Minaur in the previous round, he showed his ling for playing Australians by defeating another one, John Millman, the world number 55, in their quarter-final on Friday.

The first set was initially dominated by serve, although Giron did save one break point. However, it was Millman who was the first to drop his serve and, having got his nose in front, Giron held on to take the set.

Again, he took control of proceedings midway through the second set with a  break. Millman had two break back opportunities in the next game, could not take either of them and Giron made him pay for that with a  second break, The American was able to serve out from there to love.

Monfils will start favourite, not only because of his seeding and higher world ranking, but also by dint of the fact that he has spent less than an hour on court this week and is comparatively well rested.
