Ruud Wins Classic Against Dimitrov

Casper Ruud, who has reached a career-high ranking of 1o, has won four titles this year, all on clay. Since Wimbledon, the Norwegian went on a winning spree, winning three consecutive titles at the Swedish Open, Swiss Open and the Austrian Open.

Earlier during the US Open Series, Ruud hit good form on the  North American hard courts as he was a quarterfinalist in Toronto and repeated the fate the following week in Cincinnati defeating Reilly Opelka and Diego Schwartzman along the way. However, it was a disappointing US Open for him with a second round loss against Dutch qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp who in turn went on to make the final eight.

After a resounding win on the hard courts of the Laver Cup defeating Opelka, Ruud was up against veteran Andy Murray in the second round here at the San Diego Open. Ruud hit some good form but the gritty Briton did not go down without a fight as the Norwegian won a well contested match 7-5,6-4, giving plenty for Murray to speak well off in his post match interview.

The Norwegian faced Lorenzo Sonego in the final eight, with the Italian having been in good touch coming off straight set wins against Nikoloz Basilashvili and Sebastian Korda. The second seed put on a clinical display prevailing 6-1,6-4.

It was a classic semi-final encounter against Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria that saw some of the best tennis of the week on display. While Ruud clinched the first set 6-4 and was up a break in the second set, Dimitrov fought back hard to break back, equalize and then break again to clinch the second set 6-4.

The third set an exchange of service breaks, until Ruud upped the ante at 3-3 to break again and this time hold serve through the end of the set to close the match 6-4 in the third set and qualify for his first ever hard court final and his fifth ATP final of the season.

Norrie Upsets Top Seed Rublev

Briton Cam Norrie has had an excellent 2021 season overall reaching four tour level finals, winning his first career title and reaching an all-time career high ranking of number 28 in the world. In addition, Norrie has performed well on all surfaces.

Norrie reached two finals on clay at Estoril and Lyon, and also finished runner-up on grass at Queen’s club. To top it all, he won his maiden title on the hard courts of Los Cabos in August.

However, his form took a dip thereafter with early losses regularly through the US Open series including an opening round loss in New York to Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz.

Playing his first tournament since the US Open, Norrie has worked himself back into form here defeating Dominik Koepfer and Dan Evans in the first two rounds, setting up a quarter-final against Canadian Denis Shapovalov, where he put on an excellent display to upset the Canadian 6-3,6-1 in the upset of the tournament at the time.

Norrie started as an underdog in his semi-final encounter against in-form and top seed Andrey Rublev and the Russian seemed to be coasting with a first set win. However, Norrie was persistent with his shot making as he broke Rublev in the second to eventually clinch the set.

A mixture of Norrie’s persistence and improved fitness and game, alongside Rublev tiring and getting frustrated at his own errors in the third saw the Briton step up the level of play a notch and the clinch the match in the decider with the one break of serve in that third set.

Ruud v Norrie Prediction and Tip

It is an exciting first ever clash between two players who have had a breakthrough season and what better time to meet than at the ATP 250 final in San Diego, the week before the Indian Wells Masters 1000.

A final match that could go either way is before us, and while Ruud starts as a slight favorite on paper, it remains to be seen how much he has left in the tank after the grueling Dimitrov semi-final.

Having beaten Shapovalov and Rublev, expect Norrie to scalp Ruud in a decider to clinch the title.
