Samsonova will be playing in a first tournament since reaching the semifinals in Luxembourg last month. The 22-year-old Russian, who broke into the top 100 for the first time this year, is currently ranked 42nd in the world and brings an overall 33-19 season record to Indian Wells.
Samsonova captured her first WTA title at the WTA 500 in Berlin this year. Playing as a qualifier, the Russian defeated Marketa Vondrousova, Veronika Kudermetova, Madison Keys, Voctoria Azarenka and Belinda Bencic (in the final) to clinch the grass court title. She also made it to the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time in her career and looked good on the hard courts of Luxembourg, where she beat Bencic again.
Can Samsonova carry that form to Indian Wells? She is 7-4 from her last 11 matches, all on hard courts and that includes two qualifying round wins in Cincinnati. She has already shown this season that she can punch above her weight and having done well in the last tournament she will be looking to carry that form to her maiden Indian Wells campaign.

Kozlova Beats Paolini to Enter Main Draw
Ukraine’s Kateryna Kozlova qualified for the main draw with a 6-1, 6-3 drubbing of top seed Jasmine Paolini in the second qualifying round on Tuesday.
Seeded 15th in the qualifiers, Kozlova had beaten Germany’s Tatjana Maria 6-3, 6-1 in the first qualifying round on Monday.
The 27-year-old Ukrainian came to Indian Wells with an 18-14 season record from all levels. She had also qualified for Chicago last week and then stunned compatriot Marta Kostyuk in the first round before falling to Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the Round of 32.
Ranked No. 136th in the world, Kozlova had a couple of decent results on clay this year, making it to the semifinals Gdynia, Poland and the quarterfinals in Budapest.
Having got into a good rhythm in the qualifying rounds, Kozlova will look to keep up the good work in the main draw.
Samsonova v Kozlova Prediction and Tip
Samsonova will be the favourite to win this contest. Expect her to advance for a second-round meeting with 25th seed Veronika Kudermetova.
