Cincinnati Finalist Teichmann

Prior to this year, Teichmann did not have a good record in major tournaments, but she has improved on that by first reaching the semi-finals in Dubai, and then going one better in Cincinnati.

She eventually lost to Ashleigh Barty, but in the process of getting to that fianl, she claimed the scalps of Naomi Osaka, compatriot Belinda Bencic, and then Karolina Pliskova (who is the top seed in Indian Wells0.

Teichmann would have been hoping for a good run at the US Open, but her progress was halted at the second round stage by Anett Kontaveit of Estonia.

Since then, she has made the quarter-finals in Ostrava, and last week, got to the third round in Chicago, before losing to the Czech player Maketa Vondrousova in straight sets.

Clay Court Player Begu Begins Well

Begu has been coming to Indian Wells on and off for ten years, and has only been further than the second round, and that was in 2017.

Instead, her better results in Grand Slams and WTA Premier events have come in clay court tournaments, including a semi-final appearance in Madrid and two runs to the quarter-finals in Rome.

But she made a wining start to her latest campaign in the California desert with a good win over Fiona Ferro of France, the world number 81.

Begu made a strong start breaking Ferro in the opening game of the match, and exerting constant pressure on the Ferro serve. The Frenchwoman saved five break points in a marathon fifth game, but was powerless to prevent the Romanian breaking her again next game, and serving out for the set.

However, it was Ferro who was initially on the front foot in the second set, securing an early break of her own.

But serving for the set, she faltered at the wrong time and allowed Begu to break back. Eventually a tie-break was needed and Begu held her nerve the better, securing victory with her first match point.

Teichmann v Begu Prediction and Tip

Although their head-to-head record is even, Teichmann will start the favourite to win courtesy of her higher ranking and seeding, and better recent form.
