Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova v Madison Keys Head to Head

This will be the fifth meeting between the two and the current head-to-head record is two wins apiece. Keys won their first match in 2016 in Canada, and triumphed again at the Rome Open in 2018, although, earlier that year, it was the Russian’s turn to claim a victory in Stuttgart.

Their most recent match came in Madrid earlier this year, Pavlyuchenkova winning in straight sets.

French Open Finalist Pavlyuchenkova

Although she has not added to her haul of 12 senior WTA titles in 2021, Pavlyuchenkova can still look back on this season with some satisfaction. After all, she reached her maiden Grand Slam final, losing to Barbora Krejcikova in the French Open.

And she has an Olympic gold medal in her collection now, having won the Mixed Doubles in Tokyo with Andrey Rublev.

This is only her third Premier event of the year – she was beaten in the first round in Dubai, but, in Madrid, where she has a good record, having won the event previously and twice made the last eight, she reached the semi-finals.

A quarter-finalist at Indian Wells in 2010 when still a teenager, she was given a first round bye this time.

Last week, the Russian was beaten in he first round in Chicago, but prior to that, had reached the second round in Ostrava, and the fourth at the US Open.

Keys Brushes Aside Estonian Veteran

Keys’ record in American hard court Premier events is generally good, but she has not enjoyed the same degree of success at Indian Wells as she has experienced in some of the other tournaments, a fourth round appearance in 2017 the best she has managed in California.

But she got her latest campaign in California up and running with a  comfortable win over the Estonian veteran, Kaia Kanepi, the world number 60.

The American breezed through the first set in just 16 minutes without dropping a game, and conceding only two points on her serve.

Kanepi was broken early in the second set, but then belatedly decided to put up some resistance and she broke Keys twice in successive games, and had the chance to serve for the set.

She could not take, it however, and Keys was then able to break back. This time, Kanepi had to serve to stay in the match, but the pressure proved too much for the 36-year old. She saved three match points, but not the fourth.

Pavlyuchenkova v Keys Prediction and Tip

Although their head-to-head record is currently even, and Keys has the advantage of playing on home soil, Pavlyuchenkova won the most recent match between the two this year, and will be favoured to progress through to the third round.
