Krejcikova One of the Favourites on Debut
Very rarely does it happen that you enter a main draw of a big tournament for the first time and yet your are seen as one of the top contenders for the title. That’s precisely the case with Barbora Krejcikova as she makes her singles debut at Indian Wells on Saturday.
That’s the impact the Czech has had this season. Till last year, the 25-year-old had achieved very little as a singles player but come 2021 and the Czech is not just the most-improved but also the player who has had the maximum impact in the season. A 43-13 season record and her first three career titles, including a major, are a testament of that. What’s more, Krejcikova broke into the top 10 for the first time this year and is currently occupying a career-high ranking of No. 5.
The best part about Krejcikova’s season?
Her astronomical rise in singles hasn’t hampered her doubles game. The Czech won the doubles gold at the Olympics with Katerina Siniakova and also won the French Open doubles title along with the same partner. She had another major glory at the Australian Open, winning the mixed doubles title with Rajeev Ram.
A dangerous doubles player throughout her career, the crafty Czech’s rise in the singles is what has turned heads this season. Along with her maiden Grand Slam success at Roland Garros, Krejcikova also won titles at Strasbourg and Prague and finished runner-up in Dubai.
On Saturday, she will be taking the court for the first time since the quarterfinal defeat to Aryna Sabalenka on her U.S. Open debut. It was her second quarterfinal exit in a row, having lost at that stage in Cincinnati as well. Having made phenomenal gains this year, she will be looking to keep building on the season with another deep run at Indian Wells.

Diyas Breezes Past Hibino
Facing Krejcikova in the Round of 64 will be Kazakh qualifier Zarina Diyas, who knocked out Japan’s Nao Hibino in the first round on Thursday.
The 108th-ranked Diyas conceded an early break in the first set, but recovered in the later stages to claim the set with two breaks of serve. The second set too had a similar start with Hibino taking a 0-2 lead, but the Kazakh came back again and broke the Japanese thrice to take the contest 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 13 minutes.
This was the second Japanese that Diyas defeated this week, having won her first qualifying round against Kurumi Nara in straight sets. In the second qualifying round, Diyas defeated Belarus’ Olga Govortsova 6-3, 6-3 to enter the main draw.
The 2017 Japan Open champion came into the tournament with a 17-19 record from all levels this season. Recently, she made a first round exit from the U.S. Open and won one and lost one in Luxembourg and Nur Sultan. A run to the quarterfinal on clay in Lausanne is the farthest she has gone this season. Having got three wins in a row can she keep the rhythm going on Saturday?
Krejcikova v Diyas Prediction and Tip
