Zidansek Battles Past Konjuh
Slovenia’s Tamara Zidansek held off a spirited Ana Konjuh of Croatia to advance to the third round on Saturday.
With Konjuh taking a 0-2 lead in the first set, Zidansek had to fight her way back into the set. She cancelled out the break advantage in the fourth game and then went on to break again in the 10th to claim the first set.
In the second, it was Konjuh’s turn to come back from 0-3 down to draw level at one-set apiece and set-up an intriguing decider.
Zidansek was first to break in the third to go 2-0 up, but Konjuh responded immediately, getting the break back. The series of breaks continued with the Slovenian breaking Konjuh a second time in the set to take a 3-1 lead and she protected it till the end for a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win in two hours and 13 minutes.
The win improved the 23-year-old to 30-18 from all contests in what’s been a terrific season. Zidansek won the title in Lausanne and finished runner-up in Bogota. Her most notable performance came at the French Open where she reached the semifinals. The performance also helped her break into the top 50 in the world.
Since that title in Lausanne she has seen a bit of dip in form and came into the tournament with a 3-5 record from her last eight completed matches.

Tomljanovic Stuns Muguruza
Wimbledon quarterfinalist Ajla Tomljanovic stunned Garbine Muguruza in the second round on Saturday.
Tomljanovic, who breezed past the USA’s Usue Maitane Arconada 6-0, 6-2 in the first round, outplayed Muguruza in the first set, breaking the Spaniard thrice while getting broken just once.
The Aussie, however, didn’t get a single break point opportunity in the second as the fifth seed picked up her level and clinched the set without breaking a sweat.
Tomljanovic took a 2-0 lead in the third only to see the lead wiped off in the sixth game, but the Aussie got into a good rhythm from that point on as she knocked out the World No. 6 and last week’s Chicago Fall Classic champion 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in an hour and 52 minutes.
The win improved the World No. 47’s season record to 26-20 this season. Her best showing this year came at the Wimbledon when she reached the last eight before falling to Ash Barty. It is only the fourth time this year that the Australian has won four matches in a row. Apart from her run at the Wimbledon, Tomljanovic reached the third rounds at Charleston and the U.S. Open. Can she win three in a row on Monday?
Zidansek v Tomljanovic Prediction and Tip
Despite Tomljanovic’s win over Muguruza and her dominance over Zidansek, the latter will be favourite in this contest. She is the seeded player, higher-ranked and has displayed better form this season. Expect Zidansek to advance.
