Daniil Medvedev v Grigor Dimitrov Head to Head

Medvedev leads the head-to-head 3-1. While Dimitrov won their first meeting on the Queens’ Club grass in 2017, the Russian has since won on the hard courts of the Citi Open in Washington DC, the US Open and earlier this year in Cincinnati.

Medvedev Juggernaut Continues

The world number two Daniil Medvedev has had a strong season already having also led Russia to an ATP Cup win, being runner-up at the Aussie Open, and winning titles at Marseille, Mallorca and Toronto in addition. To top it all he was the US Open champion last month.

With his strong serve and clinical return, Medvedev defeated Novak Djokovic in the US Open final a fortnight ago to stop the world number one in his bid to become the first man since Rod Laver to win the Calendar Slam and kept the Serb tied with Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal on 20 Grand Slam titles.

Making his Laver Cup debut last month, the surface was well suited to the Russian as he defeated Denis Shapovalov convincingly and added  two valuable points on the board for Team Europe.

In the absence of world number one Novak Djokovic, Medvedev is the number one seed here at Indian Wells and one of the favorites for the title. He has looked in clinical form in his first two rounds, taking out Mckenzie McDonald after a first round bye and then defeating veteran Serb Filip Krajinovic in the third round.

While the win against McDonald was convincing, Krajinovic put up a fight after losing the first set and took the top seed to a tiebreak but Medvedev was clinical in the breaker clinching it 7-1 and making the round of 16, here in Indian Wells.

Dimitrov Downs Opelka In Quest For Deep Run

The 30-year-old Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, who reached three consecutive quarterfinals at the start of the season, all on hard courts, including the Australian Open, has since found the going difficult on clay and grass, and is now looking to salvage the up-and-down season with another deep run.

Dimitrov came into the tournament with a good run last week at the San Diego Open making the semi-finals after a 4-6 record from the last 10 matches, which went back to his first-round exit from Roland Garros.

The Bulgarian had a good run in San Diego, as he made the semi-finals where he was involved in the match of the tournament and narrowly lost out to eventual champion Casper Ruud, who is currently on a hot run of form, holding the most number of titles in 2021.

It has been a good start to the tournament for Dimitrov with two convincing straight set wins against Daniel Altmaier and especially Reilly Opelka as he continues to search for his first tile win since clinching the year end ATP Tour Finals in London in 2017.

The Bulgarian will be aware that he will be on top of his game and consistency in his next round given the form the world number two Medvdev is in.

Medvedev v Dimitrov Prediction and Tip

This makes for an exciting match, with both players capable of some impressive shotmaking. However, they are at very different places with their game and form now. While Dimitrov has not won a title in almost four years, Medvedev has been on a run through the hard court season and is the favorite for another title this weekend.

Dimitrov will give it his best but expect another Medvedev win in straight sets.
