Stunned by Aliaksandra Sasnovich at Indian Wells, Simona Halep heads to Kremlin Cup with hopes of getting something out of a season marred by injuries and lack of form.
She is returning to the tournament after eight years. The last time Halep featured in the Moscow event, it was in 2013 when she went all the way to lift the title by beating Samanta Stosur in the final.
A two-time Grand Slam champion and winner of 22 tour-level titles, Halep hasn’t featured in a final since winning the Italian Open title last year. The 30-year-old Romanian is 16-8 this season. She was a semifinalist in Stuttgart and featured in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and the Gippsland Trophy, but hasn’t had much success in other tournaments. A major reason for that was a calf injury that she picked during the Italian Open, which kept her out of the French Open and Wimbledon.
She returned to action in Montreal, but had another injury blow in the next tournament in Cincinnati. Having regained fitness Halep reached the fourth round of the U.S. Open but could win just one match at Indian Wells before bowing out.

Potapova Looking to Impress at Home
Facing Halep in the first round will be local hope Anastasia Potapova.
The 20-year-old is ranked 77th in the world and brings a 21-21 season record to the tournament. She brings a good form to the tournament having reached the quarterfinals at Asatna Open in the last tournament and the fourth round of the Ostrava Open before that.
Her most notable performance this year was a run to the quarterfinals in Dubai, where she defeated Belinda Bencic en route. She was also a quarterfinalist in Birmingham.
This is the third time she will feature in the main draw of the Kremlin Cup, having bowed out of the first round in 2018 and 2019.
