Bublik’s Title Hunt Continues

Bublik remains one of the nearly men of tennis, with his elusive search for a senior men’s title set to continue for another year unless he can set that right in the few remaining tournaments of the season.

He has come close this year, beaten in the finals in Antalya and Singapore at the start of the year, and again in the final of the doubles at the French Open.

Although he now represents Kazakhstan this is something of a home event for Bublik, who was actually born in Russia.

After reaching the second round of the US Open, Bublik then went to Nur-Sultan, where he was the number two seed. He reached the semi-final, but was then defeated by Soon-woo Kwon of South Korea, the surprise winner of the tournament.

He has not played since, opting to give Sofia and Indian Wells a miss.

2009 Moscow Semi-Finalist Marchenko

Marchenko turned pro in 2005, and, although he mainly plays on the Futures and Challenger tours, he hs achieved a degree of success at senior level, and, five years ago, reached a career high ranking of 49.

He has fond memories of Moscow, because he reached the semi-finals here 12 years ago.

The 34-year old Ukrainian’s last appearance on the senior tour was in Sofia, where he came through qualifying  to enjoy a first-round victory over the Italian veteran Andreas Seppi. He then took the first set of John Millman, the world number 62, before losing the next two.

Required to qualify again here in Moscow, he came through after two straight set victories, defeating first Radu Albot of Moldova, and then the Austrian Jurij Rodionov.

Bublik v Marchenko Prediction and Tip

Bublik’s game should be too strong for the Ukrainian qualifier, and the man born in Russia will be looking for a deep run in what is effectively a home event for him.
