Camila Giorgi v Danka Kovinic Head to Head

The two ladies have never met before on the WTA Tour.

Giorgi Battles Past Bolsova

Camila Giorgi started as the fourth seed in Tenerife Ladies Open and had to fight her way past the Spanish qualifier Aliona Bolsova in the opener. Playing for a little over two and a half hours, the Italian took the match 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-4 to set up the clash with Kovinic.

Looking at the Italian’s overall season, it has certainly been an impressive year for the 29-year-old, but one can’t help but think if it’s been a one-hit-wonder.

Her win-loss tally for 2021 is 24-16 (including her current run), boosted by her title run at the Canadian Open in Montreal. She won her first singles title since October 2018, defeating the likes of Petra Kvitova, Cori Gauff, Jessica Pegula, and Karolina Pliskova.

On the back of that run, Giorgi jumped into the 30s from the early 70s in the ranking. Since then, however, she lost her opening-round games in Cincinnati, New York, Chicago, and Indian Wells.

Her other highlights of the season include a semifinal appearance in Eastbourne International and a quarterfinal feat at the Tokyo Olympics.

Kovinic Starts Strong

26-year-old Danka Kovinic kickstarted her Tenerife Ladies Open campaign with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Alison Van Uytvanck. That win marks the first time since the French Open that Kovinic has moved past the first round on the WTA Tour.

Between then and now, the Montenegrin has featured in a few tournaments in the United States, Slovenia, and Germany but ended up losing quite early.

Kovinic’s defining run of the season came in Charleston over two weeks where she was the runner-up in the WTA 500 edition and a semifinalist in the 250. Her form has been largely underwhelming on hard courts this season, evident from the figures of 5-11. She has been more of a clay person but will hope to pick up some traction here in Spain.

Giorgi v Kovinic Prediction and Tip

Giorgi will start as the favourite, at least on paper, but her serious lack of form and momentum gives Kovinic just as good of a chance to reach the quarterfinal.

Expect an intriguing tennis match that may very well go to three sets.
